The Baoulé Kingdom Reveals Itself to the World
About the Baoulé Kingdom
A Legendary Origin
At the heart of the great Akan tradition, the Baoulé Kingdom traces its roots to the 18th century, in the legendary journey of Queen Pokou — a founding figure whose courage, sacrifice, and vision left an everlasting mark on the soul of the Baoulé people.
Fleeing the turmoil that shook the Ashanti Kingdom, Queen Pokou led her people across forests, rivers, and savannahs. Their long and perilous migration culminated in the founding of a new nation in the fertile heart of present-day Côte d’Ivoire: the Baoulé Kingdom, with Sakassou as its spiritual and political capital.

A Historic and Cultural Pillar
Since its founding, the Kingdom has established itself as one of the historical, cultural, and political pillars of the Ivorian nation. Governed by a traditional monarchy and deeply anchored in the values of peace, unity, and dialogue, it has preserved its legacy while adapting through the centuries.
A New Era Under King Nanan Kouakou Dje II
Today, under the leadership of King Nanan Kouakou Dje II, the 14th Sovereign of the Sakassou throne, the Baoulé Kingdom steps confidently into a new era of revival, progress, and international presence.
The King—committed to his heritage yet future-facing—invites all Baoulé, in Côte d’Ivoire and abroad, to unite around the timeless values of dignity, solidarity, and shared purpose.
